& Juliet

& Juliet is a witty take on Shakespeare's classic. Juliet forgoes the classic ending and does things her own way. You honestly have to be there to understand it. There's no plain balcony scene here. The only tragedy in this tale is you not being there with the rest of the crowd. It will be shown live at Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Friday 25th October 2024. This one will have all the right fixings for a fantastic night out, and trust us when we tell you that you really don't want to miss out on this one.

Set side by side with the former plot of the Shakespearean play which debuted live on stage roughly four hundred years ago, viewers have discerned the stark alterations that were implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more modern production based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original narrative centers around the tragic ending that transpires because of rash decision-making and the blind passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic tale and instead chooses a more positive outlook by embracing on the infinite possibilities of life, even after such agonizing experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new showl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her gang of friends, who travel to Paris and come to realize their identities not just as individuals, but as remarkable women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist interpretation through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes control of her husband’s story and alters the ending of his popular classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a rare moment to shine, while welcoming new and equally talented women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the show is able to incorporate pop culture, specifically songs from recent generations, that highlight the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the women throughout the production. Even the fashion worn by the show’s women give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while highlighting the contrast between the ongoing musical and the previous classic by using Elizabethan fashion and iconography with today’s clothing styles. Each aspect of the musical was carefully thought-out to illustrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
