Moving away from the former storyline of the Shakespearean play which was presented live on stage approximately four centuries ago, fans have noted the considerable changes that were applied to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer production based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original drama is centered around the tragedy that transpires because of rash decision-making and the insatiable passion of two lovers, which results in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead embraces a more positive outlook by concentrating on the endless possibilities of life, even after such agonizing experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new showl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her team of friends, who head to Paris and find their identities not just as individuals, but as powerful women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes the reigns of her husband’s story and alters the ending of his famous classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a rare moment to shine, while bringing in new and equally capable women to the cast. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the production is able to incorporate contemporary culture, specifically songs from recent decades, that express the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the leading cast throughout the musical. Even the dresses worn by the musical’s cast give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while presenting the contrast between the new production and the previous classic by pairing Elizabethan costumes and iconography with today’s clothing styles. Each aspect of the production was carefully thought-out to emphasize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
