In her journey, she runs into both old relations and new acquaintances whom which were not part of the original script. Using a very modern viewpoint, & Juliet revives the classic and finds a way to entertain even young viewers.

Moving away from the previous storyline of Shakespeare's creation which was shown on stage approximately four hundred years ago, viewers have noted the considerable changes that had been made to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more contemporary production based on the same female lead. Shakespeare’s original drama centers around the tragedy that transpires because of rash decision-making and the uncontrolled passion of two lovers, which results in the poisoning of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead chooses a more positive outlook by embracing on the limitless possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new showl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her group of friends, who make a trip to Paris and embrace their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes the reigns of her husband’s story and changes the ending of his beloved classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a chance to shine, while bringing in new and equally capable women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the musical is able to incorporate pop culture, specifically songs from recent years, that depict the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the show. Even the costumes worn by the play’s characters give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while conveying the contrast between the new musical and the previous classic by pairing Elizabethan costumes and iconography with today’s dress styles. Each aspect of the production was carefully thought-out to symbolize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
